John Jay

New York- A middle colony that was originally founded by the Dutch, and was later taken over by the Duke of York(British). By 1787 the state was said to have a population of about 233,000 people. Also, like most of the other middle colonies, New York had fertile soil and some good land for farming. It had a moderate growing season and popular sea ports. It had the Hudson River, and had a good livestock and produced foods from the family farms.


Background/Occupation- John Jay was born in New York, New York on December 12, 1745. As a young man he was extremely intelligent. When he was 14 he graduated from Kings College in present day Columbia. Later he became an attorney and a judge. He was a member of the New York Committee of Correspondence, and became the first Chief of Justice for the United States Supreme Court.


John Jay did not attend the Constitutional Convention due to the fact that he was working as the Foreign Minister in New York at the time.


John Jay had been a member of the state’s ratifying convention, and voted yes towards it.
